The Jasper County Communications Center is a consolidated dispatch center, providing police, fire, and emergency medical dispatch services to the citizens and visitors of Jasper County.

The Jasper County Communications Center serves as the vital link between the citizens and visitors of Jasper County, and all emergency responders, to include law enforcement, fire fighters, and emergency medical technicians. Housed in the Emergency Services Building, the Center is built to operate up to eight (8) console positions and can serve as a backup center to other 9-1-1 Centers from surrounding Counties in times of disaster, should the need to relocate occur.

As a 9-1-1 PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point), the Jasper County Communications Center is required to:

  • Provide an enhanced 9-1-1 Center: providing ANI (Automatic Number Identifier) and ALI (Automatic Location Identifier) features.
  • Provide a sufficient number of 9-1-1 lines. (The Center maintains 4 E-911 Lines, 2 B-911 Lines, and 4 Administrative Lines.)
  • Provide an electronic recording system that records all incoming and outgoing 9-1-1 calls, as well as radio transmissions from the dispatch channels.
  • Provide immediate playback options of recordings for 9-1-1 personnel to access.
  • Maintain a physically secure facility to house the 9-1-1 Center.
  • Provide the equipment necessary to communicate with the hearing/speaking impaired.
  • Employ communications personnel that have been trained and certified with the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
  • Employ communications personnel that are certified NCIC operators, CPR/AED certified, TCPR certified, and EMD certified.

On average, the Communications Center generates 65,000 calls for service per year and answers an average of 50,000 non-emergency calls and 35,000 9-1-1 calls. On average the Center places and/or transfers an average of 32,000 phone calls per year. In 2024 the Center’s staff spent a total of 2,656 hours handling phone calls.

Staff are expected to simultaneously handle both emergency and non-emergency phone calls and radio traffic from 3 law enforcement agencies and 3 fire rescue and EMS agencies. Staff typically work 12-hour shifts and are assigned to a day or night shift. The Center is staffed 24/7, every day/night of the year. Staff function under highly stressful conditions and must be able to process and respond to multiple situations at one time. Staff must use multiple computer systems and applications as well as hear and speak to callers and responders in the field at the same time.
